Colour Schemer by Dulux Trade
Dulux Colour Schemer is a Web App for design professionals to explore colour palette ideas and create colour schemes for commercial projects.
My role
I was brought into the project as the UI designer. Working with Hack and Craft we needed to create a product that allowed users to apply colours from Dulux Trades’ vast colour library to a large number of sector images, build up colour schemes and then apply these schemes to mood boards with all required colour and paint specs for commercial output.
Focus
My main focus was on the user flows of selecting and applying colours and the ordering and sharing of the final mood boards in a way that fully leveraged the advantages of the custom-built technology.
When it came to displaying the colour schemes, depending on the chosen Core colour, keeping the main functional elements within the viewport was critical and proved challenging to overcome without overwhelming the user with too many options.
After exploring several design options and user feedback, we decided to best house the available colour schemes in a horizontal scroll at the bottom of the viewport, where the user can see them but they don’t interfere with the preview flow.
Across device
Prototyping on mobile was crucial on this project.
Shown here are workings through several design iterations on how we best show the ‘active’ colour scheme, over the preview on mobile devices.
Pushing the brand
Working closely with the Product Director, development team and the client, I had to visualize ideas within a fast-paced iterative sprint environment. Applying the Dulux brand across all product UI, creating a familiar and globally trusted Dulux experience.
Designing Solutions
During the design phase, I discovered a few design challenges. Through rapid prototyping I was able to effectively communicate the proposed design solutions to the client and wider team.
This example is showing design options on the first steps of the ‘Core colour’ flow.
Assets
For the design phase I develop a pattern library and build an experience that was fully brand tested.
Additionally, I had to produce and design all assets associated with the product; from mood board layouts, sector images for chosen colour schemes applications and several supporting email templates.
